Happy International Day of Education from Wisdom International School of
Excellence (WISE)
Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.
Last year December. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24
January as International Day of Education in celebration of the role of
education for peace and development.
Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong
opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender
equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of
children, youth and adults behind.
Today, 262 million children and youth still do not attend school; 617
million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than
40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some
four million children and youth refugees are out of school. In Nigeria 10.4
million children are out of school.
In the FCT, particularly the slum communities many children are out of
school due to socio-economic reasons. Many parents cannot afford the cost
of education even in public schools. The right of these children to
education is being violated and it is unacceptable.
As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility in WISE, we are partnering
with an NGO to provide access to quality education for vulnerable children
through a Scholarship Scheme ( Back to School for Generations of Brighter
Future).
As a way of improving the Basic Education Curriculum, are integrating and
have also developed many programmes to promote quality education for today
and the future. Such programmes include: Financial Literacy, Science,
Technology Reading Engineering Arts Mathematics (STREAM), music, vocational
and Sustainable Development Goals Education, Teaching Apprenticeship
Programme and In-Service Teachers Development Programme.
I tell you, the future of our children are brighter because we are
preparing them morally, socially and economically for today, the 21st
Century and beyond.
As the world marks the very first International Education Day, Wisdom
International School of Excellence (WISE) calls on parents, governments,
religious leaders and all lovers of education to make universal quality
education a leading priority.
Thank you.
